Overview

Aims

This internship is offered for 2 days per week (negotiable) for 3 months. The role is unsalaried, however, interns will be paid $20.00 per day to cover lunch and travel expenses. Internships are located at The Conversation's newsroom in Melbourne or Sydney.

The Conversation is a non-profit organisation and our internships meet Fair Work Australia Guidelines.

Outcomes

There are two roles available: one for podcast; one for data visualisation / graphics. In your application, please nominate which role you are applying for.

To be considered for an internship, applicants will need to demonstrate the following for the respective roles:

Podcast internship

An interest and entry-level experience in audio / radio journalism
Competence in conducting interviews (via phone or in person) both for production and for pre-interview screening
Experience at clean recording of audio
A working knowledge of audio editing software, such as Audacity, Audition, Hindenburg, or others.
Excellent team work skills and willingness to work with a range of people
Video editing and Photoshop skills a bonus
A keen interest and understanding of the media and public affairs
Data visualisation / graphics internship

Passionate about data and data representation and experienced at communicating complex data and ideas to a general public audience
You will need to be creative in determining how to visualise and communicate the data
Skills and experience in Adobe Photoshop (layers, masks, etc); and a working knowledge of Illustrator would be a bonus
Adept at searching for data (OECD, ABS, etc)
Experience using spreadsheet (MS Excel, Google spreadsheet, etc), and at crunching numbers and creating charts
Knowledge of Google Fusion, Datawrapper, and mapping tools a bonus
Excellent team work skills and willingness to work with a range of people
A keen interest and understanding of the media and public affairs
